The Island Games take place every two years and are open to islands with a population less that 125,000 where regular and ready access to participation in competition in other communities is inhibited by their geographical situation. The Games are governed by the International Island Games Association (IIGA). The first Games were held in the Isle of Man in 1985 and the Cayman Islands joined the IIGA in 1997. For gymnastics, female athletes must be 13 years old and male athletes must be 14 years old as of the day of the opening ceremonies for the Games.
